St. Louis classical calendar for the week of May 30, 2016

The Community Music School of Webster University presents Cellofest 2016: Bach to Hip-Hop on Monday, May 30, at 7 p.m. "Cellofest 2016: Bach to Hip Hop features CMS student and alumni cellists in ensembles ranging from one cello to as many as 25 cellos. YPSO conductor, David Commanday, will conduct the concert. Moh Ghraiz, hip hop and break dancer, and COCA faculty member will dance in the concert. Featuring a commissioned work for this concert, Kerwin Young's Cellét is written for 10 cellos and dancer. Kerwin Young was a part of the rap group Public Enemy's production team the Bomb Squad. Other works by J.S. Bach, Giancarlo Menotti, David Popper, Arvo Pärt, Julius Klengel and the Mexican mariachi piece “Cielito Lindo.”" The Community Music School is at 535 Garden Avenue on the Webster University campus. Vince Mendoza conducts the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra with singer/songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter on Saturday, June 4 at 7:30 p.m. "Five-time Grammy Award-winner Mary Chapin Carpenter joins the STL Symphony on stage for a special performance featuring arrangements from her debut orchestral record, “Songs from the Movie,” arranged and conducted by Vince Mendoza. This one-night-only performance with one of the country's most beloved singer-songwriters is not-to-be missed!" Performances take place at Powell Symphony Hall, 718 North Grand. Steven Jarvi conducts the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra in music by Beethoven, Berlioz, and Stravinsky on Friday, June 3, at 8 p.m. "Musicians of the STL Symphony Youth Orchestra have astounded audiences for over four decades with their artistry and talent. Don't miss your chance to hear 100 of the most talented young musicians from across the region live at Powell Hall!" The Community Music School of Webster University presents a faculty recital on Friday, December 4, at 7 p.m. "Performing Classical to Jazz to Contemporary music, the recital will include Community Music School faculty members: Tom Byrne, guitar; Sandra Geary, piano; Julia Hornberger, cello; Chris Hubbard, saxophone; Karl Koesterer, piano; Jennifer Toro Mazzoni, flute; John McClellan, guitar; Katie Myler, clarinet; Sue Pankratz, piano; Elizabeth Ramos, violin; and Jeanine York-Garesche, clarinet." Bernard Labadie conducts the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, with soloists Lydia Teuscher, soprano; Allyson McHardy, mezzo-soprano; Jeremy Ovenden, tenor; and Kyle Ketelsen, bass-baritone, in Handel's Messiah. Performances are Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m., December 3-6. "With bright trumpets and the timeless "Hallelujah" Chorus, Handel's Messiah returns to Powell Hall under the direction of Bernard Labadie. Composed in only 24 days, Messiah remains Handel's most popular work and one of the most performed classical works of all time. Wednesday, December 2nd, at 8 pm, The Sheldon Concert Hall presents Celebrate the Holidays with St. Louis Symphony concertmaster David Halen and jazz pianist Peter Martin. "Celebrate the season with St. Louis Symphony concertmaster David Halen and jazz pianist Peter Martin as they perform holiday favorites such as "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On an Open Fire)" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," as well as classics by Gershwin and more! The Tavern of Fine Arts presents Two Singing Tenors and a Piano in a Pear Tree on Thursday, December 3, at 8 p.m. "Pianist and tenor Jon Garrett teams up with tenor Phil Touchette and soprano Rebecca Drury for a holiday-centric evening full of laughter, fun, and celebration of the season's festivities. Come hear Phil in his first Tavern appearance since last winter, joined by Rebecca for their first collaboration concert together, all led by maestro Jon on the keys. The program will include favorite familiar tunes, comical solos and duets, along with a few unique arrangements and surprises." The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis presents a concert by Pomerium on Saturday, March 21, at 8 p.m. "Pomerium was founded by Alexander Blachly in New York in 1972 to perform music composed for the famous chapel choirs of the Renaissance. Widely known for its interpretations of Du Fay, Ockeghem, Busnoys, Josquin, Lassus, and Palestrina, the 15-voice a cappella ensemble has performed for numerous international festivals." The Community Music School of Webster University presents an Emerging Composers Concert on Saturday, March 21, at 3 p.m. "Winning compositions from the Young Composers Competition will be performed by professional musicians. The concert will include A Middle Quartet ("In Medias Res"), an original work by guest composer, Dr. Don Freund. Professor of Composition at Indiana University, Dr. Freund's work has been described as 'exciting, amusing, disturbing, beautiful and always fascinating,' Music and Musicians, London." The St. Louis Symphony's Crescendo Circle presents Sips and Symphonies on Thursday, March 19, at 7:30 PM. "What is Sips and Symphonies? The University of Missouri—St. Louis presents a University Orchestra Concert featuring 2014 Concerto Competition Winners on Wednesday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. The performance takes place at The Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri at St. Louis campus. Washington University presents the Missouri Saxophone Quartet on Monday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. "The Missouri Saxophone Quartet (MSQ) was formed in 2009 and is devoted to exploring and promoting new music, particularly that of Missouri composers. The group has inspired several commissions which they have presented at venues such as the World Saxophone Congress in St. Andrews, Scotland, the North American Saxophone Alliance's Biennial Conferences at the University of Georgia and the University of Illinois, the United States Navy Band's International Saxophone Symposium in Fairfax, Virginia, and the Odyssey Chamber Music Series of Columbia, Missouri. The MSQ performs a wide variety of styles from baroque transcriptions, to traditional French repertoire, to jazz and tango, and the avant-garde. The MSQ is also committed to educational outreach, having performed at numerous high schools throughout the State of Missouri." Washington University presents The Washington University Choirs with special guests More Fools Than Wise in Just Folks on Friday, March 20, at 8 p.m. "The Washington University choirs draw their membership from the best singers in the Washington University community. Students from the schools of Art and Architecture, Law, Business, Medicine, Engineering as well as Arts and Sciences participate in a season which includes appearances on and off campus, both within and outside of St. Louis. A highlight of the year is the Annual Chancellor's Concert, a joint appearance with the Washington University Symphony Orchestra, held in the spring in the E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall. The Chamber Choir and Men's and Women's Glee Clubs perform masterworks from six centuries and many cultures, encompassing sacred and secular works, folk and art music, and both accompanied and a cappella repertoire."
