MUTE: A Play for Zoom
St. Louis playwright Nancy Bell's MUTE: A Play for Zoom, which was performed live via Facebook on April 5, 2020, is available as a live stream at vimeo.com. "In a world much like ours, there exists a video conference call. And in this call, there are academics, confusion, fire and...one hamster. An experimental theatre piece that steals rabidly from Ionesco, Beckett, real life and Chekhov. The play was for performance on Zoom by Nancy Bell and directed by Lucy Cashion."

Metro Theater Company presents a two-play summer digital streaming series, including the 2019 world premiere of The Girl Who Swallowed a Cactus by Eric Coble (available through June 28) and the critically acclaimed 2016 production of And In This Corner... Cassius Clay by Idris Goodwin (available June 23 - July 26). Both productions, which were directed by MTC Artistic Director Julia Flood, will be available in a pay-what-you-can pay-per-view environment at www.metroplays.org/watchnow. Prior to this summer streaming series, both productions were part of a virtual international festival and conference hosted earlier in May by TYA-USA, the national service organization for theaters for youth and families, attended by over 1,200 theater and education professionals.

New Jewish Theatre presents a virtual reading of the new play DELI: A Slice of St. Louis via Facebook video June 9 – 13. “The Jewish delicatessen is an American institution. In DELI, a Saint Louis delicatessen must contend with a changing city, and owner David Narinsky—as well as the ghost of his father—must tackle his beloved business’s uncertain future. By interweaving past and present, the play tracks how change itself is perhaps as traditional as pastrami or kugel. Opera Theatre of St. Louis presents special live celebration of Opening Night Spotlight: Susannah on Saturday, June 13, at 7 pm, marking the night on which this festive production would have opened. "During the Opening Night Spotlight, you’ll get to see set model photos, design inspirations, and original video content, in addition to hearing from some of our artists and creative team." The live stream will be available at www.opera-stl.org

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, in collaboration with Baltimore Center Stage, Long Wharf Theatre, The Public Theater and Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, present Play at Home, a series of micro-commissioned short plays from some of the American theatre's most exciting and prominent playwrights. These new plays – which all run 10 minutes or less – are available for the public to download, read and perform at home for free at playathome.org.

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis invites budding young writers throughout the nation to develop and submit plays to for inclusion in its all-new WiseWrite Digital Play Festival. Open to all students grades 4 through 12, this online celebration of storytelling will culminate in June when professional actors perform selected student submissions over Zoom. To help students develop the skills to write their first plays, The Rep will release a six-part online learning curriculum - one part each week through the end of May. ERA Theatre presents a live Zoom videoconference version of Moscow!, its drinking game version of Chekov's The Three Sisters, Thursdays and Fridays from 8-9 pm and Saturdays from 1-2 pm through May 30. "Olga, Irina, and Masha are sisters living in an insignificant town in Russia. They spend a lot of time talking about how all they really want to do is go back to Moscow, where everything is better. The town's people come and go through the sisters' house, which they own with their brother, Andrey. Everyone is so emotionally erratic - is it because they're Russian? Perhaps it's because they're drunk. Three Sisters examines the frivolity of privileged life; Moscow! intensifies it with live music, dancing, and vodka. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ERA will live-stream its performances of Moscow! and all artists will perform from the safety of their respective isolated locations." Perhaps it's because they're drunk. Three Sisters examines the frivolity of privileged life; Moscow! intensifies it with live music, dancing, and vodka. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ERA will live-stream its performances of Moscow! and all artists will perform from the safety of their respective isolated locations." Sister Act: ERA revives its inventive "Moscow!" as a webinar

Lucy Cashion, the Artistic Director of ERA Theater, has pretty firmly established herself as the expert in pouring old theatrical wine into new bottles.

Her Trash Macbeth in 2016, for example, threw Shakespeare's tragedy into the blender with some Emily Post, Dr. Spock, Sun-Tzu, and 1950s-era commercials, and the result was what Steve Callahan, writing for KDHX called "a strange and compelling piece." Oedipus Apparatus, her radical rewrite of Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus, was a wildly inventive and wholly original potpourri combining the general outline of the Oedipus legend with classical Newtonian mechanics, plane geometry, Freudian psychology, and contemporary pop culture. It also cleverly used the architecture of West End Players' basement black box as an integral element of the set.

Back before either of those, though, there was ERA's remarkable Moscow!, created for the 2015 St. Lou Fringe Festival. Described as a drinking-game version of Chekov's Three Sisters, the script was an ingenious one-hour reduction of the original, with everyone in the cast (and much of the audience) taking a drink whenever anyone said "Moscow." Which, if you know your Chekov, happens a lot.

That production moved at light speed, with actors rattling off vast chunks of Chekov with machine-gun precision while marching about the stage in precise steps through the box-like maze of red chairs that served as a set. Combined with original music director Joe Taylor's live performance of Russian classics (mostly Prokofiev and Khachaturian, as I recall), it all added up to an impressive combination of parody and homage.

ERA had planned to mount a new production of Moscow! at the Centene Center this month, complete with custom cocktails (Moscow Mules, of course!) for the audience. The pandemic took care of that idea, but Cashion and her ERA colleagues decided to perform it live anyway--just not in an actual theatre and not in person.

Live performances of ERA's Moscow! began last weekend and continue this Thursday through Saturday (May 28-30) at 8 pm in the comfort of your own home via the Zoom videoconferencing platform. With everyone including Music Director Joe Taylor performing from their own homes, this online version lacks some of the immediacy of that Fringe original, but on the whole Ms. Cashion and her talented cast have done a remarkable job of repurposing Moscow!. As my KDHX colleague Tina Farmer noted, the production had the feel of all taking place in the same room, despite the physical separation of the performers.

As with the live original, the new version includes a pre-show in which some of the characters speak directly to the audience. In 2015 they did it while wandering the theatre lobby. Here, they're on your screen around 10 minutes before the 8 pm start time, so you'll want to show up a bit early to get the full experience.

Said experience retains the fast pace and sense of fun that distinguished the original. The cast does outstanding work, despite the inherent awkwardness of the format. Ellie Schwetye, Rachel Tibbets, and Alicen Moser shine as the three Prozorova sisters, perfectly delineating their radically different personas, and they're supported by an impressive ensemble of local actors who all thoroughly inhabit their roles. Congratulations to all for a difficult and challenging job well done.

Recognizing the limitations of the format, ERA is not charging for tickets, but because the virtual "house" is limited by the Zoom app to 100 people, including the cast, you will need to reserve a slot on line at www.artful.ly/era. While you're there, seriously consider making a donation to ERA. Times are tough for performing arts organizations right now, and if everybody helps a little, it can go a long way.

Which, now that I think of it, is not a bad paradigm for how we can defeat COVID-19.

Who's zoomin' who?: "MUTE: A Play for Zoom" is an innovative mix creepiness and comedy

Nearly every aspect of the economy has taken a hit from the COVID-19 pandemic. And while some sectors are listening to politicians rather than medical professionals and preparing to resume business as (almost) usual, performing arts organizations are obliged to take a more cautious approach. Theatres, concert halls, music clubs, and other indoor environments where large groups of people gather are high-risk areas for airborne virus transmission, leaving local theatre companies in suspended animation until this fall at the earliest.

As a way of staying in touch with their audiences, a number of local companies have turned to the Internet. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis made a video of its local premiere of the topical comedy "Cake," which was forced to close after only a few performances, available to ticket holders. ERA Theatre is presenting a video version of its 2015 St. Lou Fringe hit "Moscow!" as a free ticketed event through May 30. And on April 5th, local playwright Nancy Bell and director Lucy Cashion (the creator of "Moscow!") presented the world premiere of "MUTE: A Play for Zoom" as part of a Facebook live "watch party."

I missed that premiere, but happily a video of "MUTE" is available both on Facebook and at Vimeo. I watched it last night and while this half-hour one-act is not without its issues, it makes ingenious use of the popular videoconferencing platform. Watching it on my laptop with headphones, I was quickly drawn in to the darkly comic world of the play.

A smart mix of hilarity and horror, "MUTE" manages to be both comic and creepy simultaneously. "In a world much like ours," says playwright Bell, "there exists a video conference call. And in this call, there are academics, confusion, fire, and...one hamster." One rather remarkable hamster, I might add.

The play's setting is a Zoom teleconference in which a group of academics are waiting for The Dean ot join them from the Frankfurt campus so they can begin the official agenda. They're hampered by the fact that most of them have been unable to download the agenda and by the fact that The Dean appears to be related to Beckett's Godot. The academics in question are a motley crew. Marie (Michelle Hand) is desperate to get out of her house and back to her office on the locked-down campus because "the event" has infected her son (Liv Hand) in ways that are, to say the least, disturbing. Her older colleague Trent (Michael James Reed) views "the event" through a radical leftist lens while sucking on an obviously unlit cigarette. Heather (Delaney Piggins) urgently needs to see her grandmother and Fiona (Keating MX) finds her attention divided between the conference call and her unseen husband, whose dementia seems to be turning violent.

Staffer Justin (Jakob Hulten), the only one not clearly on the edge of mental or physical collapse, is bemused and then unnerved by the increasingly sinister tone of the meeting--a tone made even more so by the barely-seen presence of Lila and her hamster Man Ray (Sophia Brown).

In her description of the play, Bell cheerfully acknowledges her debt to Ionesco, Beckett, and Chekhov. And I did, in fact, see references to "Rhinocerous," "Waiting for Godot," and "The Three Sisters," respectively. But I also found its mix of the delirious and disturbing reminiscent of some of the Firesign Theater's more dystopian audio plays, especially "In the Next World, You're On Your Own" from 1975. And the way it relies on what is hinted at rather than what is shown for a sense of horror harkens back to the work of H.P. Lovecraft. But the final product is uniquely hers.

Everything tends to fall apart a bit at the end, at least for me. But even so "MUTE" is a compelling and original theatre piece that gets great performances from the entire cast. Michelle Hand's hilariously unglued and clueless Marie (effectively the leading role) is yet another bright feather in her theatrical cap, but the fact is that everyone involved does fine work.

It's hard to know what shape the local theatre scene will take over the next year or so, but "MUTE: A Play for Zoom" certainly suggests some interesting possibilities.

On Sunday, May 31, at 7 pm Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL), in collaboration with 14 other arts organizations and the Regional Arts Commission (RAC), presents Arts United STL, a free virtual benefit in support of RAC's Artist Relief Fund, which provides critical aid to St. Louis working artists whose livelihoods have been critically interrupted by the pandemic. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, in collaboration with Baltimore Center Stage, Long Wharf Theatre, The Public Theater and Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, present Play at Home, a series of micro-commissioned short plays from some of the American theatre's most exciting and prominent playwrights. These new plays – which all run 10 minutes or less – are available for the public to download, read and perform at home for free at playathome.org.

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis invites budding young writers throughout the nation to develop and submit plays to for inclusion in its all-new WiseWrite Digital Play Festival. Open to all students grades 4 through 12, this online celebration of storytelling will culminate in June when professional actors perform selected student submissions over Zoom. To help students develop the skills to write their first plays, The Rep will release a six-part online learning curriculum - one part each week through the end of May.
