Take me (virtually) out

So, bunky, you say you're just dying to follow the NL playoffs but you don't want to deal with the noise, crowds and Champagne-priced beer at Busch Stadium?  Well, there was a time when you could watch the game on TV for free but Free Enterprise (tm) has taken care of that for you; the games can only be seen on MLB-TV, a pay cable service.  What's a fan to do?  I've been trolling the Internet and have come up with a couple of nifty technology solutions.  One of them is even free.

To begin with, you can always follow the game the traditional way by listening to the live broadcast on KMOX, 1120 AM.  But if you want to hear it without the AM static, you have a couple of options.  KMOX makes its AM broadcast feed available on the HD 3 channel at KEZK, 102.5 FM.  You'll need an HD radio to pick it up, of course (as described in my article on HD radio), but the it's worth it.  The sound quality is way better.

That said, if you have a computer, you don't even need an HD radio to hear the broadcast in digital sound and follow the game live.  The ESPN stream is available at via tunein.com and, of course, the KMOX stream is available at the station web site. Combine that with mlb.com's cool Gameday web app, which shows you the score and every single pitch in real time, and you have an experience which, while it's not the same as live or video, is still pretty darned good at capturing the excitement of live baseball.

And it's free.  You can relax with your snacks and drinks of choice in cool comfort.  No need to stand in line for the toilet, either.  Unless you have a really big family.  There are some problems even technology can't solve.
