St. Louis classical calendar for the week of May 13, 2019

Post-season concerts continue at the St. Louis Symphony and The Chamber Project presents its annual audience choice concert.

The Bach Society of St. Louis presents A Bach and Baroque Family Concert on Thursday, May 16 at 6:30 pm. "The Bach Society of Saint Louis is proud to offer a free education concert tailored to families, which will focus on Bach and Baroque performance practice. Bach specialist David Gordon will serve as a narrator and teacher, and India-born soprano, Sherezade Panthaki, will sing several musical examples in this style, accompanied by Sandra Geary and Bach Society Concertmaster, Lenora Marya-Anop. Ms. Panthaki will also discuss her Indian heritage and how it impacted her chosen career path, giving some insight into Indian culture while also displaying how music continues to break barriers and can overcome societal differences." The Bach Society of St. Louis presents a performance of Bach's Mass in B Minor on Sunday, May 19 at 3 pm. "Bach's most monumental work is the cornerstone and grand finale of the 2019 St. Louis Bach Festival. Composed over a span of 35 years, the Mass in B minor reveals the depth and breadth of the master's creativity and spiritual conviction. Guest soloists include soprano Sherezade Panthaki, sponsored by Greg and Alayne Smith, mezzo-soprano Meg Bragle, tenor Lawrence Jones and baritone Tyler Duncan. The Chamber Project St. Louis presents Choice on Friday, May 17, at 8 p.m. "Always fun, this program is chosen by you, our audience. The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Peter Bernstein, presents a showing of the 1984 film Ghostbusters, with the score played live by the orchestra, Friday and Saturday at 7 pm, May 17 and 18. The wind, brass, and percussion players of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra team up with military musicians from the U.S. Air Force Band of Mid-America and the 399th Army Band for a free Joining Forces On Stage at Powell concert on Sunday, May 19, at 3 pm. "The afternoon of rousing musical performances features patriotic anthems, military medleys, and an unforgettable performance commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing that includes narration and video. IN UNISON Chorus director Kevin McBeth shares the podium with military band directors in this epic joint performance with some of the best musicians in uniform." The Bach Society of St. Louis presents Bravo Bach on Sunday, October 18, at 3:0 p.m. "The Bach Society Chorus and Orchestra perform music from past concerts representing all six of our conductors. The program also features Mary Wilson, a Bach Society Young Artist from 1997-99, singing Handel's "Gloria" for virtuoso soprano and strings, plus several pieces that will include alums of the Bach Society to form a Reunion Chorus." Eliot Unitarian Chapel presents a Friends of Music concert on Sunday, October 18, at 3 PM. "The program will feature Lorraine Glass-Harris and Jim Harris in a program of Baroque string and flute music on the first half. The second half will be Paola Savvidou and Jonathan Kuuskoski, playing music for piano four hands. They are on the faculty of the University of Missouri in Columbia. The St. Louis Art Museum presents a high-definition video broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera's production Verdi's Otello on Saturday, October 17, at 11:55 AM. "The Met season opens with Verdi's masterful Otello, inspired by Shakespeare's play and matching it in tragic intensity." Steven Jarvi conducts the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra with piano soloist Inon Barnatan on Friday at 10:30 a.m., Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m., October 16-18. The St. Louis Symphony's Crescendo Circle presents Sips and Symphonies on Thursday, October 15, at 7:00 PM. "What is Sips and Symphonies? The University City Symphony Orchestra presents Out of Africa on Sunday, October 18, at 3 p.m. The concert " is the first in a series of concerts that will take an in-depth look at symphonic music's African roots. The concert celebrates the music of Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the first recognized composer of color in Europe, as well as Ghana native and St. Louis-based musician Fred Onovwerosuoke. The Bach Society of St. Louis presents Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, March 1, at 3 PM.  “Few choral works even come close to the profound impact that Handel’s Messiah has had on audiences for over 250 years. This dramatic work offers an inspiring meditation on the life of the Messiah, from the prophecy of His birth through His death and resurrection, and culminating in man’s redemption and thanksgiving. The Chorus and Orchestra are joined by four outstanding Baroque soloists. Bach Society favorites mezzo-soprano Patricia Thompson and bass Curtis Streetman will return, while introducing two new performers to our audience: tenor Steven Soph and soprano Nathalie Colas from Strasbourg, France.”  The concert takes place at Firsts Prebyterian Church of Kirkwood, 100 East Adams.  For more information: www.bachsociety.org

The Ethical Society presents a Great Artist Guitar Series concert with Martha Masters on Saturday, February 28, at 8 p.m.  "In October of 2000 Martha Masters won First Prize in the GFA International Solo Competition, a recording contract with Naxos, a concert video with Mel Bay, and an extensive North American concert tour. In November of 2000, she also won the Andres Segovia International Guitar Competition in Linares, Spain. She has been a prizewinner or finalist in many other international competitions.
In addition to being on the guitar faculty of California State University Fullerton and Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Masters is also the President of the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA), dedicated to supporting the instrument, its players and its music in the US and throughout the world."
