St. Louis classical calendar for the week of February 17, 2020

The IN UNISON Chorus celebrates Black History Month this week and the St. Louis Cathedral Concerts bring a cappella sounds to the Cathedral Basilica.

The Metropolitan Orchestra performs on Sunday, February 23, at 7 pm. "This concert will feature Conductors Allen Carl Larson and Andrew Peters. The orchestra will perform Mozart's Piano Concerto in C major with pianist Jerry Chan and Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A." The concert takes place at First Presbyterian Church, 100 E. VOCES8

The St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra presents a concert of music by Charbrier, Howard Hanson, Leonard Bernstein, and Rimsky-Korsakov on Friday, February 21, at 8 p.m. The concert takes place in the Scheidegger Center for the Arts on the Lindenwood University campus in St. Charles. Kevin McBeth conducts the St. Louis Symphony IN UNISON Chorus and soloist Oleta Adams in Lift Every Voice: A Black History Month Celebration, on Friday, February 20, at 7:30 pm. Introducing generations to orchestral music, each character in this musical fairy tale is represented by a different instrument of the orchestra. Two big annual holiday concerts take place at Powell Hall this week, along with chamber music just down the block at the Sheldon.

The Bach Society Christmas Candlelight Concert
The Bach Society of St. Louis presents the annual Christmas Candlelight Concert on Tuesday, December 10, at 7:30 PM. “A St. Louis Christmas tradition, the Christmas Candlelight Concert is sure to leave you feeling merry and bright. Plan to join us for Poulenc's Gloria with soprano soloist Michele Kennedy, the beloved candlelight processional, and even the “12 Days of Christmas” with a special appearance by The St. Louis Children's Choirs and Webster University Chamber Singers. The Mercy Holiday Celebration
Stuart Malina conducts the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra along with the Holiday Festival Chorus and soloist Rachel Potter in the Mercy Holiday Celebration Friday through Sunday at 2 and 7:30 pm, December 13-15. St. Louis Cathedral Concerts presents the Bach Society of St. Louis performing the Requiem by Maurice Duruflé on Sunday, March 3, at 7:30 pm. "One of the most beautiful choral works ever written, Duruflé's Requiem is the perfect complement to the resonant acoustics of the Cathedral Basilica. The Bach Society Chorus and Orchestra are joined by mezzo-soprano Alice-Anne Light sponsored by Gwen Adams, and Canadian bass-baritone Alexander Dobson." The St. Louis Brass Band presents Amazing Brass on Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. "The concert will include marches, including the always popular 'Colonel Bogey March,' music from the movies including the exciting 'Silverado,' the contemporary tour-de-force 'Vitae Aeternum,' 'Tubby the Tuba' featuring Principal tubist Wes Scott, and the beautiful hymn songs 'Wondrous Cross' and 'Guardian of My Soul.'" The Sheldon Concert Hall presents the contemporary chamber ensemble Alarm Will Sound on Friday March 1, at 8 p.m. “In May, musician Matt Marks, a founding member of Alarm Will Sound, died suddenly in St. Louis after a performance. On March 1st at 8pm at the Sheldon Concert Hall, Alarm Will Sound will commemorate him with a performance of his work Strangers in Many Ways, a work he created for Alarm Will Sound, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Brooklyn Philharmonic. St. Louis Cathedral Concerts presents the American Spiritual Ensemble on Friday, February 1, at 8 pm. "Comprised of some of the finest classically trained singers in the United States, the mission of the American Spiritual Ensemble is to keep the American Negro spiritual alive. Since its inception by Dr. Everett McCorvey in 1995, the vocalists have thrilled audiences around the world with their dynamic repertoire ranging from spirituals to classical to jazz and Broadway numbers highlighting the Black experience. The American Spiritual Ensemble is unique in that over 90% of the members are accomplished soloists who have sung in theaters and opera houses world wide. The resulting sound of this group is something that choral groups with two or three featured soloists cannot duplicate." The Chamber Music Society of St. Louis presents its Amadeus on Monday and Tuesday, January 28 and 29, at 7:30 pm. CHARIS
CHARIS, the St. Louis Women's Chorus, presents Meet Me at the Muny on Friday and Saturday, November 30 and December 1, at 8 pm. "In addition to featuring numbers from the many Broadway shows that have made their way to the Muny stage including 42nd Street, Les Miserable, Aida, and Spamalot, the concert will celebrate musical theater's recognized history as a venue of safety and affirmation for members of the LGBTQ community, as exemplified in shows like Rent, Fun Home, and others. The New Music Circle presents composer and keyboard player Lonnie Holley in concert on Saturday, December 1, at 7 pm. "For four decades, Lonnie Holley has devoted his life to the practice of improvisational creativity. His art and music, born out of struggle, hardship, but perhaps more importantly, out of furious curiosity and biological necessity, has manifested itself in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and more recently performance and recordings. The layers of sound are the result of years of evolving experimentation; improvised on the spot, Holley’s sounds and lyrics morph with every event, concert, and recording." St. Louis Cathedral Concerts presents Christmas at the Cathedral on Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 2:30 pm, December 1 and 2. The Bach Society of St. Louis presents a performance of the oratorio Eternal Light by Howard Godall, composer of the score for Downton Abbey, on Sunday, March 11, at 3 pm. “In this modern requiem, the chorus is accompanied by harp, piano and strings. The Radio Arts Foundation presents Kaleidoscope - Next Generation Artist Concert, featuring 10-year-old local virtuoso pianist Jerry Chang, on Sunday, March 11, at 3 pm. Grammy Award-winning singer and rapper Wyclef Jean performs with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra on Friday, March 9, at 7:30 pm. The Washington University Department of Music presents a Department of Music Lecture by trombonist, composer, and improviser Steve Swell on Thursday, October 6th, at 4 p.m.  "Steve Swell, born in Newark, New Jersey, has been living, working and performing in New York City his entire adult life. In the mid-seventies he studied with Roswell Rudd, Grachan Moncur III and Jimmy Knepper after attending Jersey City State Teacher’s College. He's toured and recorded with such diverse jazz personalities as mainstreamers Lionel Hampton and Buddy Rich, to so-called outsiders like Anthony Braxton and Jemeel Moondoc. Swell has 40 recordings as a leader or co-leader and is a featured artist on more than 100 other releases. The New Music Circle presents Okkyung Lee (cello) and Lotte Anker (saxophone) on Saturday, February 21, at 7:30 PM. Okkyung Lee has been developing her own approach to cello performance for over a decade. Unbound by any specific genre or style, her visceral yet communicative sound draws from her background in extended instrumental techniques, Korean traditional musics and contemporary experimental aesthetics. Born in Korea but based in New York City since 2000, she has released several albums on labels such as Tzadik, Ideologic Organ, and Ecstatic Peace. In an unforgettable 2011 performance in St. Louis, Danish saxophonist, Lotte Anker, left a lasting impression on all those who witnessed and an eager anticipation for a return visit. Informed by the rich improvised music scene of Copenhagen during the late ‘80's, Anker has honed a dramatic sense of pacing and tone, juxtaposing brisk sounds against long stretches of extended melody, creating an effect that is both moody and responsive.... and occasionally sounding as if Evan Parker were to sit in with Sun Ship-era Coltrane." Unity Evangelical Lutheran Church presents Voices from the Holocaust: Music Makes You Free on Monday, February 16, at 12:15 p.m. " Kathleen Nigro, Gail Fleming, and Barbara Harbach, UMSL faculty members, present a program in honor of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Dachau and Terezin (Theresienstadt) concentration campus. They talk about a visit to Dachau and meeting with a survivor, Mendel Rosenberg, here in St. Louis. They present Fleming's musical arrangement of the Dachaulied taken from the walls at Dachau and original vocal composition Shalom "for the victims of Dachau." Harbach present her song cycle, Terezin Children's Songs, for soprano, violin and piano on children's poetry from the Terezin concentration camp where around 15,000 children between the years 1942-1944 were imprisoned; only100 of them survived. Three outstanding musicians perform the song cycle: Stella Markou, soprano; Julia Sakharova, violin; and Alla Voskoboynikova, piano." Washington University's Danforth University Chamber Music Series presents harpsichordists Maryse Carlin and Todd Decker in concert on Wednesday, February 18, at 7:30 p.m. The program consists of music by JS Bach, WFE Bach, Gaspard le Roux, and Antonio Soler. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis presents organist Todd Wilson in concert on Sunday, February 8, at 2:30 p.m.  "Regarded across America and around the world as one of today’s finest concert organists, Todd Wilson is head of the Organ Department at The Cleveland Institute of Music, and Director of Music and Worship at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition, he is Curator of the E.M. McKendree College presents a The Five Browns in concert on Wednesday, February 4, at 7:30 PM.  "Ryan, Melody, Gregory, Deondra and Desirae Brown were the first family of five siblings accepted simultaneously to New York’s Juilliard School. Whether performing individually or together in various combinations from duo to complex five-piano arrangements, The 5 Browns reveal a deep connection to the intent of their material, bringing a fresh energy to classical music. Their first wave of critical attention came in February 2002, when People magazine dubbed them the “Fab Five” and they were featured on “Oprah” and “60 Minutes.” Three of their CDs went to No. 1 on Billboard Magazine’s Classical Album Chart. Stéphane Denève conducts the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra with piano soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m., February 7 and 8.  "Dvořák’s pastoral and exuberant Eighth Symphony shimmers like a bright dream of nature and draws its inspiration from the Bohemian folk music that Dvořák loved. Composer James MacMillan’s music combines a modern idiom with both Catholicism and Scottish nationalism. His Piano Concerto, The Mysteries of Light, attempts to revive the ancient practice of writing music based on the structure of the Rosary." The Tavern of Fine Arts presents the Duo Noire guitar duo on Saturday, February 7, at 6 p.m.  "Duo Noire performs “Beyond Ferguson” composed by Thomas Flippin. Duo Noire is comprised of classical guitarists Thomas Flippin and Christopher Mallett. Formed while both were attending the Yale School of Music as the first African American guitarists in the university’s history, Duo Noire has been hailed as a “virtuosic pair” and has gone on to perform across the U.S. at prestigious venues such as the Norfolk Music Festival, the 92nd Street Y, the Times Center, and for the St. Louis Guitar Society as Artists-in-Residence. “‘Beyond Ferguson’ does not offer any agenda, blame, or solution to the issues in Ferguson. Rather, it aims to document many of the sentiments that have arisen but are hard to express in words. As such, the piece begins with a melody from Michael Brown’s own music, to give him a chance to speak directly. The Eliot Quartet
Washington University presents the Eliot Quartet in a program of piano trios by Beethoven, Bruch, and Mendelssohn on Friday, February 6, at 8 p.m. "Violin and cello converse in low, hushed tones. The piano responds gently, mournfully, but grows increasingly emphatic. Brief pauses become tense outbursts and wrenching stops. Pianist Carl Czerny, a student of Ludwig van Beethoven, once wrote that his teacher’s Piano Trio in D major, opus 70, no. 1 (1808), reminded him of the ghost of Hamlet’s father. He was not far wrong.
