St. Louis classical calendar for the week of April 22, 2019

The Bach Society of St. Louis kicks off the Bach Festival 2019 this week and Leonard Slatkin returns to conduct the SLSO in the first of two sets of concerts.

The Bach Society at St. Stanislaus
The Bach Society of St. Louis presents the Bach Society Young Artists and pianist Sandra Geary on Sunday, April 28, at 4 pm. "These four soloists will perform Bach arias and other favorite pieces from the impressive wide-ranging repertoire of operatic and recital works. This concert is presented jointly with the Bach Society of St. Louis and is part of the Bach Society's 2019 St. Louis Bach Festival." The St. Louis Brass Band presents 20th Anniversary Blazin' Brass on Sunday, April 28, at 2:30 p.m. "The Saint Louis Youth Brass Band will also be featured. "Strike Up The Band" and "Gaelforce" have been traditional featured repertoire of the Brass Band for these twenty years and will open and close this concert. Many other favorites from throughout the years will be performed as tribute to the many performers who have made this ensemble the wonderful success it is today." The Schola Antiqua Chicago
St. Louis Cathedral Concerts presents the Schola Antiqua Chicago on Friday, April 26, at 8 pm. "Schola Antiqua of Chicago is a professional early music ensemble dedicated to the performance of repertory before the year 1600. An ensemble that executes pre-modern music with "sensitivity and style" (Early Music America), Schola Antiqua takes pride in providing the highest standards of performance, research, and education as it highlights underserved repertories from this period. Founded in 2000, the organization has received invitations to perform from museums, libraries, festivals, universities, and other institutions across the country. The ensemble is currently Artist-in-Residence at the Lumen Christi Institute and formerly a resident artist at the University of Chicago." Leonard Slatkin returns to conduct the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and Chorus Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 3 pm, April 27 and 28. The program consists of Loren Loiacono's Smothered by the Sky, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1 with soloist Olga Kern, and Bernstein's Symphony No. 3 ("Kaddish") with narrator Charlotte Blake Alston. The Sheldon Concert Hall presents St. Louis Symphony Orchestra Assistant Concertmaster Erin Schreiber, along with members of the SLSO, in Women's Suffrage on Wednesday, April 24, at 8 p.m. "One hundred years ago the U.S. Congress voted to approve the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote. We mark this long overdue congressional action with a concert that celebrates women in classical music -- composers such as Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann and Amy Beach." Concerts this week include Duruflé's Requiem by the Bach Society, Mahler's Ninth by the St. Louis Symphony, and Carmina Burana at Washington U.

St. Louis Cathedral Concerts presents the Bach Society of St. Louis performing the Requiem by Maurice Duruflé on Sunday, March 3, at 7:30 pm. "One of the most beautiful choral works ever written, Duruflé's Requiem is the perfect complement to the resonant acoustics of the Cathedral Basilica. The Bach Society Chorus and Orchestra are joined by mezzo-soprano Alice-Anne Light sponsored by Gwen Adams, and Canadian bass-baritone Alexander Dobson." The St. Louis Brass Band presents Amazing Brass on Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. "The concert will include marches, including the always popular 'Colonel Bogey March,' music from the movies including the exciting 'Silverado,' the contemporary tour-de-force 'Vitae Aeternum,' 'Tubby the Tuba' featuring Principal tubist Wes Scott, and the beautiful hymn songs 'Wondrous Cross' and 'Guardian of My Soul.'" The Sheldon Concert Hall presents the contemporary chamber ensemble Alarm Will Sound on Friday March 1, at 8 p.m. “In May, musician Matt Marks, a founding member of Alarm Will Sound, died suddenly in St. Louis after a performance. On March 1st at 8pm at the Sheldon Concert Hall, Alarm Will Sound will commemorate him with a performance of his work Strangers in Many Ways, a work he created for Alarm Will Sound, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Brooklyn Philharmonic. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis presents organist Dr. Horst Buchholz on Sunday, January 22, at 2:30 p.m. "Buchholz studied organ and sacred music in his native Germany at the Berlin College of Church Music and graduated with degrees and diplomas in Church Music and Music Pedagogy from the University of Arts in Berlin. His organ teachers have included Heinz Lohmann, Peter Wackwitz, and Rudolf Heinemann. Among his conducting teachers were Martin Behrmann, Uwe Gronostay, and Erich Bergel. After receiving his teaching certificate in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Arts in Berlin in 1989, Dr. Buchholz continued his post-graduate studies in the United States, where he received his Doctor of Music degree in conducting from the Indiana University School of Music." Iva Bittová
New Music Circle presents vocalist/violinist Iva Bittová and percussionist Hamid Drake, on Friday, January 20, at 8 p.m. "Vocalist/violinist Iva Bittová (Czech Republic) is internationally known for her unique music, which draws on influences from her native Moravia and her lineage in the rich traditions of Slovakia and the Roma people. Her ability to bring those influences together with such modern inspirations as Meredith Monk's wordless vocal pieces and free improvisation, creates music that feels both ancient and new, simultaneously surprising and familiar. Bittová is a storyteller who rarely uses actual language to convey the emotions of her stories. While either singing wordlessly or using an implied language of her own, she crafts intimate, engrossing narratives, ultimately creating her own truly personal style of folk music. Hamid Drake is an American jazz drummer and percussionist, living in Chicago, but spending a great deal of his time touring worldwide. Drake is widely regarded as one of the great percussionists in jazz and improvised music, with a uniquely poetic approach to drumming. The performance takes place at Joe's Café, 6014 Kingsbury. New Morse Code
The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University presents the cello / percussion duo New Morse Code performing music inspired by the exhibition Real / Radical / Psychological: The Collection on Display on Monday, October 24, at 5 p.m. NYC-based New Morse Code is devoted to bold and engaging performances of music worth sharing. The Collegium Vocale of St. Louis presents The Splendors of Rome: Music of the early 18th Century on Sunday, October 23, at 2 p.m. " The Collegium Vocale of St. Louis will present a concert of music heard in Rome in the early 18th century, featuring a performance of Francesco Durante's celebrated “Magnificat”, Other composers including Palestrina, Pitoni, Severi, and Stradella, The singers of Collegium Vocale of St. Louis will be supported by period instruments." The St. Louis Brass Band
The St. Louis Brass Band presents Bright, Bountiful, Brass on Sunday, October 23, at 2:30 p.m. " The first formal concert of the Saint Louis Brass Band will be presented at Lindbergh High School and will include a guest appearance by the Avon Indiana High School Brass Choir. The Brass Band will feature their English-style Brass Band mix of traditional and contemporary repertoire ranging from classical to marches to pop and jazz. Avon HS is one of the premiere high school music programs in the State of Indiana. The Brass Choir will perform several selections of their own and then the two groups will combine forces for a brass and percussion extravaganza." The Perseid String Quartet
The Washington University Department of Music presents the Perseid String Quartet in Leipzig 1843: An Evening with the Schumanns on Thursday, October 20, at 7:30 p.m. " The Perseid String Quartet recreates a joint concert that Robert and Clara Schumann gave in Leipzig on January 8, 1843. Alexander Stefaniak, Assistant Professor of Musicology, will speak about the Schumann partnership, an intricate collaboration between a prominent composer-critic and one of the most significant virtuoso pianists of the nineteenth-century. His talk will draw upon his recent book,Schumann's Virtuosity: Criticism, Composition, and Performance in Nineteenth-Century Germany."
