St. Louis classical calendar for the week of February 18, 2019

This week brings a black history month celebration to Powell Hall along with an appearance by Broadway star Sutton Foster, as well as chamber music at Washington U. and Eliot Unitarian Chapel.

Eliot Unitarian Chapel presents a Friends of Music concert on Sunday, February 24, at 3 pm. "The program will feature Beverly Field and Toni Pearson performing the Sonata in E minor for cello and piano, Op. 38, by Johannes Brahms and The Missouri Women's Chorus directed by Scott Schoonover singing a program of motets, songs from Scotland and Ireland, and African-American spirituals." St. Louis Civic Orchestra
The St. Louis Civic Orchestra performs on Sunday, February 23, at 3 pm. "The St. Louis Civic Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Edward Dolbashian, will be paying homage to American jazz music on February 23. The orchestra will present Berstien's On the Town, and Gershwin's An American in Paris. Joining the Civic for this concert will be local musician T.J. Muller and his band. The concert takes place at Logan University, just a few minutes off of highway forty. Children 5 and under are free." Kevin McBeth and the IN UNISON Chorus
Kevin McBeth conducts the St. Louis Symphony IN UNISON Chorus, along with soloists Jermaine Smith and Denise Thimes, in Lift Up Every Voice and Sing: A Black History Month Celebration on Friday, February 22, at 7:30 pm. "Founded by Dr. Robert J. Ray, the IN UNISON Chorus will perform Dr. Ray's composition, Gospel Mass, as part of the program this February. Celebrate this special Black History Month concert with powerful music that focuses on the interpretation and preservation of African-American and African cultures." Kevin McBeth conducts the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and guest vocalist Sutton Foster on Saturday, February 23, at 7:30 pm. "Tony Award-winning actor, singer and dancer Sutton Foster will dazzle audiences as she makes her SLSO debut for a one-night-only concert experience. Trio Virado
The Washington University Department of Music presents the Trio Virado on Sunday, February 24, at 4 pm. "Trio Virado is a fresh collaboration consisting of AmyPorter (flute), João Luiz (guitar), and Juan-Miguel Hernandez (viola). They bring excitement to live concerts and are equally impressive in educational settings at schools and universities. In 2015 the Trio released their long-awaited debut album, “Mangabeira” which includes premieres by Paquito D'Rivera, João Luiz, Frederic Hand, and Sergio Assad." St. Louis classical calendar for the week of February 4, 2019

This week, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra Music Director Designate Stéphane Denève makes his first appearance of the season, the Cortango Duo performs at the 560 Music Center, and the Chamber Project presents a program of memories, nostalgia, and hope.

The Chamber Project St. Louis presents Kindred on Friday, February 8, at 7:30 pm. "Memories of things lost, nostalgia, and hope permeate the music on this program. Fairouz explores the Arab-American experience in what he calls "a journey to the new world." Dvorak, dedicates his Quintet "To my nation" as an embrace of his Bohemian nationalism which brought him worldwide fame." The Intercultural Music Initiative presents a concert of wind music by African-descent composers on Sunday, February 10, at 3 pm. "IMI Chamber Players welcomes guest artists Titus Underwood, principal oboist with the Nashville Symphony, and Peter Henderson, pianist with the Saint Louis Symphony, in a concert of music by Ulysses Kay, William Grant Still, Fred Onovwerosuoke, Florence Price, as well as beloved selections from standard repertoire." The Metropolitan Orchestra
The Metropolitan Orchestra performs on Sunday, February 10, at 7 p.m. The program includes Mendelssohn's Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, and Elgar's Enigma Variations, and Ney Rosauro's Marimba Concerto No. 1. St. Charles Community College presents its annual Solo Concert on Friday, February 8, at 7:30 pm. "The performance, which is free and open to the public, will showcase brass, percussion, piano, string, voice and woodwind instruments in a variety of songs. Watch as Anna Zhong (violin), Cindy Yan (piano), Justin Collins (cello), Drew Schulz (French horn), Hannah Rivas (double bass), Millie Roussin (flute), Russell Roussin (clarinet) and Rebekah Anthonis (voice) perform on their chosen instrument. The Solo Concert is a limited-engagement opportunity. Performers had to audition and win their spots for this concert and will not be eligible for next year's performance per Annual Solo Concert guidelines. The concert takes place in the auditorium of the Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building on the SCC campus at 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in Cottleville, MO. For more information: stchas.edu.

Stéphane Denève conducts the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, along with SLSO Concertmaster David Halen, Friday at 10:30 am, Saturday at 8 pm, and Sunday at 3 pm, February 8 - 10. The concerts will consist of Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik, K. 525, The Lark Ascending and Serenade to Music by Vaughan Williams, and Brahms Symphony No. 2. The Washington University Department of Music DUC Chamber Music Series presents the Cortango Duo on Tuesday, February 5, at 7:30 p.m. Cally Banham, English horn and oboe, and Adam Maness, piano and guitar, will perform music by Bach, Astor Piazzola, Holst, and Irving Berlin, among others. The Ethical Society presents a Great Artist Guitar Series concert with Pavel Steidl Saturday, October 29, at 8 p.m. "Hailing from the Czech Republic, Steidl is one of Europe's most highly regarded artists of any instrument. Known for his dramatic presentations employing both facial and hand gesturing (even including overtone singing)-and with seldom heard 19th-century guitar literature all make his performances both stunning and uniquely engaging!" New Morse Code
The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University presents the cello / percussion duo New Morse Code performing music inspired by the exhibition Real / Radical / Psychological: The Collection on Display on Monday, October 24, at 5 p.m. NYC-based New Morse Code is devoted to bold and engaging performances of music worth sharing. Omnivorous, rigorous and inventive, Hannah Collins and Michael Compitello activate the unexpected range and unique sonic world of cello and percussion to catalyze and champion the compelling works of young composers. Opera Theatre of St. Louis presents Opera on the Go at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 29. " Join Opera Theatre of Saint Louis for a fun, engaging 70 minutes of movement and stage make-up workshops, both with audience participation, followed by an abbreviated performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's hilarious “The Pirates of Penzance.” The performance features current and former OTSL Young Artists with piano accompaniment. It is recommended for students in grades 3-10 and is tailored for young people with sound sensitivities." The St. Louis Brass Band presents Band Together on Wednesday, October 26, at 7 p.m. "The Saint Louis Brass Band will join the Ritenoir High School Symphonic Band, directed by Hadley Haux, for an evening of wind and percussion music. The Brass Band serves as Artist-in-Residence at Ritenoir HS throughout the year. Each band will perform separately and then come together in an opportunity for the adults in the Brass Band and students in the Symphonic Band to interact and perform together." The American Boychoir
Friday, October 28, at 8 p.m. St. Louis Cathedral Concerts presents the American Boychoir. "Founded in 1937 and committed to creating a distinctively American voice within the thousand-year-old boychoir school tradition, the American Boychoir is the finest boy choir in the nation and among the finest in the world. Under the direction of Fernando Malvar-Ruiz, the choir has dazzled audiences with its presentation and virtuosity." Jun Märkl conducts the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra with piano soloist Jeremy Denk in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23, Liszt's symphonic poem Prometheus, and an orchestral transcription of the Brahms Piano Quartet in G minor.
