The Alpha Players present the musical She Loves Me Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sunday (October 13 only) at 2 pm, October 4 through 13. “In a charming 1930’s perfume shop, two salesclerks spar endlessly, saving their sweetest words for an anonymous pen pal. Unbeknownst to them, their “dear friend” happens to be each other! The Black Rep presents its newest Phoenix Rising Initiative, One Vote Won, an opera composed by Dave Ragland, on Friday, October 4, at 6 pm. "Commissioned in 2020 by Nashville Opera, One Vote Won centers around an African American woman in her 20s who is convinced that she does not need to vote - then she is visited by two hidden figures highlighting the stories of a suffragist and a Civil Rights activist. The evening will also feature a post-show conversation from the League of Women Voters." The free performance takes place at The Sun Theatre in Grand Center. The Fabulous Fox presents the Back to the Future: The Musical through October 6. The Gaslight Theater and Michael Madden Productions present the St. Louis premiere of “Red Jasper,” an original play by St. Louis playwright Michael Madden and directed by Suki Peters, running October 4-13 at The Gaslight Theater in the Central West End. “How come people don’t know the right thing to do or say when someone has Cancer? Isadora is an indelicate, sarcastic survivor with a hidden vulnerability whose breast cancer has returned and who doesn't hesitate to educate people on how to act around her. The three men flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, but their paths quickly diverge as Tunny enters the armed forces, Will is called back home to attend to a pregnant girlfriend, and Johnny descends into an urban underworld, following a seductive love interest and a deadly new friendship. The St. Louis Writers Group presents the second of final round of its annual Playwright Slam Event on Monday, September 30, at 6:30 pm. “Get ready for a night of fun impromptu theater. The order of scripts to be read will be chosen at random. SATE presents the world premiere of Tempest in a Teapot by Shualee Cook Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 pm, through September 28. “At age 10, Alice Liddell inspired Lewis Carroll to write Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But at age 21, she finds herself trapped between the fantasy world created for her, and the restrictive Victorian world of Oxford, England – each with a very specific role she is expected to play. Then a chance meeting with Carroll after years of silence leads her down the rabbit hole again to the Mad Tea Party, where a seemingly casual suggestion by Carroll that she read Shakespeare’s The Tempest turns into a philosophical treasure hunt. Albion Theatre presents the thriller Mindgame by Anthony Horowitz October 20 through November 5. “Horowitz is known for his novels (including The Alex Rider series, Magpie Murders and many more) and his TV work (Foyle’s War, Midsomer Murders etc.)  This is his only full-length play.  Set in an asylum for the criminally insane, a writer of ‘true crime’ paperbacks is trying to get an interview with a notorious mass murderer but nothing is as it seems.” Performances take place at the Kranzberg Arts Center 501 N. KTK Productions presents the comedy Play On! Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm through October 22. “One plucky community theatre is about to produce a show called Murder Most Foul, a new “murder mystery play” with the same title as an Agatha Christie novel but with no relation whatsoever. The director/theatre manager, Gerry, thought producing the play was a good idea since the inexperienced playwright has agreed to let the company perform the show for no charge. Gerry, however, had no idea wat disasters awaited her: the show is hilariously amateur, the “murder mystery” plot doesn’t really have a murder, and to top it off the playwright keeps changing the story and script only two days from its premiere! It doesn’t help that the cast is disgruntled, and the playwright accidentally deletes the entire sound effect board. All of the disasters come to fruition in Act III when the company performs the actual show with hilarious mishaps as every turn. New Line Theatre presents a public reading of the new musical Gilbert and Sullivan's Bloody Kind Oedipus on Monday, January 6, at 8 pm. "After shocking the music and theatre worlds by rediscovering Gilbert and Sullivan's lost masterpiece The Zombies of Penzance in 2013, and then staging and publishing the controversial original opera, in 2018, now New Line Theatre artistic director Scott Miller has done it once again. This time, Miller has unearthed Gilbert & Sullivan's even darker and funnier BLOODY KING OEDIPUS, a comic opera no one even knew existed until now, based on Sophocles' iconic Greek tragedy of murder, incest, disfigurement, suicide, and lots of prophecies, which first debuted in 429 BC. The Theatre Guild of Webster Groves presents the thriller Night Watch, opening on Friday, January 10, at 8 pm and running through January 19. "Unable to sleep, Elaine Wheeler paces the living room of her Manhattan townhouse, troubled by unsettling memories and vague fears. Her husband tries to comfort her, but when he steps away for a moment Elaine screams as she sees (or believes she sees) the body of a dead man in the window across the way. The police are called, but find nothing except an empty chair. Elaine's terror grows as shortly thereafter she sees still another body-this time a woman's-but by now the police are skeptical and pay no heed to her frantic pleas. Her husband, claiming that Elaine may be on the verge of a breakdown, calls in a lady psychiatrist, who agrees with his suggestion that Elaine should commit herself to a sanitarium for treatment. Steve Brammeier

The Blue Strawberry presents Steve Brammeier in 68: Then and Now on Friday, November 22, at 8 pm. "Steve Brammeier has created a moving tribute to the songs of 1968, the year he graduated from high school. If you were around then, you will relive some of your memories - even if repressed. If not, you will hear a lot of great songs, and get a sense of a very formative time in our cultural and civic life. A very sweet and well-made show." The Blue Strawberry is at 364 N. My take: While I haven't had a chance to see Steve's latest show yet, I have seen some selections from it in the singers open mic that I host every month, and what I have seen has been warm, genuine, and exceptionally well done. Steve has been active on the local cabaret scene for a while now and knows his stuff, and the Blue Strawberry is a first rate cabaret venue.

Feeding Beatrice

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis presents Feeding Beatrice running through November 24. "It starts with the sound of a spoon scraping against glass and the wet noise of lips smacking together. June and Lurie have a haunting new houseguest - and she's ravenously hungry. They do their best to keep her fed and happy, but Beatrice always demands more. As she burrows deeper and deeper into their lives, the couple faces a horrific question: what will it cost to exorcise Beatrice forever?" My take: It is merely stating the obvious to point out that this little Hallowe'en present from the Rep has captivated audiences and (to a somewhat lesser extent) critics alike. For evidence of the former, look no further than the fact that the Rep has been obliged to extend the show's run. For evidence of the latter, here are a few pull quotes. Tonya Seele, Broadway World: "This play is a thought-provoking, sobering, but often times laugh-out-loud gothic tale, smartly crafted to work on many complex intellectual levels." Ann Lemmons Pollack, St. Louis Eats and Drinks: "great fun, some social nudging, perfect for the early dusk of November" Calvin Wilson, St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "unquestionably a captivating experience." None of these are unequivocal raves, as you can see by following the links, but the show is clearly a hit in any case.

It's a Wonderful Life

Metro Theatre Company presents It's a Wonderful Life, based on the classic film, through December 15. "The beloved American holiday classic leaps to life on stage in a delightful, heartwarming new adaptation. John Wolbers' "It's a Wonderful Life" has a clever twist: it's staged as a play within a play, more specifically a radio play within a play. On Christmas Eve 1949, KMTC Radio St. Louis is prepared to perform a live radio broadcast of "It's a Wonderful Life," when unexpected events transform the station's staff into the radio play's actors. Complete with microphones, live sound effects by a Foley artist, 1940s period costumes, and a diverse company of characters, the play tells the story of George Bailey and his discovery of the life-affirming message that one life can change the whole fabric of a community. My take: Well, it wouldn't be the holidays without someone doing a stage version of this beloved movie. Metro's approach has the advantage of treating it as the basis for a story that's less about the original film and more about the intrepid group of employees of a fictional radio station doing their best to work together to bring it to life over the air. "Metro Theater Company's It's a Wonderful Life brings an hour or so of a captivating and classy good time to an appreciative audience, a terrific start to the holiday season," writes Mark Bretz at Ladue News. "Don't forget to clap on cue."

St. Louis Community College at Meramec presents Maple and Vine Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 2 pm, November 20-24. "Katha and Ryu have become allergic to their 21st-century lives. After they meet a charismatic man from a community of 1950s re-enactors, they forsake cell phones and sushi for cigarettes and Tupperware parties. In this compulsively authentic world, Katha and Ryu are surprised by what their new neighbors - and they themselves - are willing to sacrifice for happiness." My take: This is not the first time (and probably won't be the last) that I'll recommend a show on the basis of the strength of its script. I haven't seen this production, but I did see the world premiere of the show at the Humana Festival in 2011 and was very impressed with it. Although it's easy to see this as a kind of egdy comedy, it's really a thought-provoking (and ultimately disturbing) comedy/drama that raises important questions about the nature of freedom and personal identity and how much of both you might be willing to give up for a good night's sleep.

Dial M for Murder

The Theatre Guild of Webster Groves presents the thriller Dial M for Murder running through January 13. "Tony Wendice has married his wife, Margot, for her money and now plans to murder her for the same reason. He arranges the perfect murder. Unfortunately...the murderer gets murdered and the victim survives. But this doesn't baffle the husband: He sees his hireling's death as an opportunity to have his wife convicted for the murder.
