St. Louis theatre calendar for the week of April 15, 2019

Easter week is usually a quiet one on the theatre scene, but we still have new shows at Webster Conservatory and Meramec Community College, as well as the monthly Singers Open Mic.

CSZ St. Louis presents The ComedySportz Show on Saturday nights at 7:30 pm. The show is "action-packed, interactive and hilarious comedy played as a sport. Two teams battle it out for points and your laughs! You choose the winners the teams provide the funny!" Stray Dog Theatre presents the musical Dreamgirls Thursdays through Saturdays through April 20. St. Louis Community College at Meramec presents Flaming Guns of the Purple Sage Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 2 pm, April 17-20. "Big 8, a former rodeo champ, is struggling to keep the cowboy dream alive even as she faces foreclosure on her Wyoming ranch. But when a wild woman and her one-eyed outlaw biker boyfriend show up on her doorstep, Big 8 suddenly has bigger problems to worry about. The spaghetti Western mythos crashes head-on into B-movie insanity in this shoot 'em up, knock 'em up, cut 'em up comic romp." Webster University's Conservatory of Theatre Arts presents the musical Love's Labours Lost, based on Shakespeare's comedy, Wednesday through Friday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2 pm, April 17-21. "Romance, revelry and enchanting music ignite in this contemporary, yet lovingly faithful, musical adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy. The King and his best buds decide at their five-year college reunion to swear off the joys of women. But when four cute, clever girls from their past show up, they're forced to reconsider all of their vows. Add in an outlandish Spanish exchange student and a performance art-loving professor, and love and devotion are put to the test with hilarious results. The St. Louis Writers' Group presents a reading of the play Poor Old Soul by Andrea Dempsey on Monday, April 15 at 6:30 pm. "Grandma Agatha is the unquestionable matriarch of the Findlay clan. She sits on her throne (a glider on the front porch), and rules with an age spotted iron hand. As her subjects come and go, to perform their daily tasks, she and her mild, equally aged companion, a lady who is constantly waiting upon the "Queen", keep their neighborhood watch. Beneath the floral house dress and apron, laying dormant under the crepey skin, is a past that would forever alter the lives of the family." The Cabaret Project presents its weekly Singers Open Mic Night on Wednesday, September 19, from 7 to 10 pm. Drop by and enjoy a night of great music from St. Louis cabaret artists, backed up by pianist and music director Carol Schmidt and hosted by 88.1 KDHX's Chuck Lavazzi. If you're planning to sing, be prepared to do one or two songs and bring music, preferably in your key. It's also recommend that you have your song memorized. St. Louis Actors' Studio presents Sam Shepard's True West Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm, through April 28. " This American classic explores alternatives that might spring from the demented terrain of the California landscape. Sons of a desert-dwelling alcoholic and a suburban wanderer clash over a film script. Austin, the achiever, is working on a script he has sold to producer Sal Kimmer when Lee, a demented petty thief, drops in. He pitches his own idea for a movie to Kimmer, who then wants Austin to junk his bleak, modern love story and write Lee's trashy Western tale." Lindenwood University presents the musical Avenue Q Wednesday through Sunday, October 4 - 8. St. Louis Community College at Meramec presents Lanford Wilson's drama Fifth of July, Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 2 p.m., October 4 - 8.  Set in a sprawling farmhouse in rural Missouri, home to Ken, a legless Vietnam veteran, and his lover, Jed, a horticulturist. Along with Ken’s Aunt, sister and niece, Ken and Jed are visited by Gwen and John—the former a hard-drinking, pill-popping heiress who aspires to be a rock star, the latter her wary-eyed husband and manager. All are old friends from college days, and former activists who agitated for what they hoped would be a better world. New Jewish Theater presents 4000 Miles through May 28. "After suffering a major loss while on a cross-country bike trip, 21-year-old Leo seeks solace from his feisty 91-year-old political activist grandmother Vera in her West Village apartment. Her solitary existence is entirely shaken when Leo appears at the door in the middle of the night assuring her that he won't stay long. Leo is in crisis, grieving deeply for his best friend and biking partner, Micah. The Theatre Guild of Webster Groves presents John Patrick Shanley's drama Doubt Fridays through Sundays through May 21. Tesseract Theatre Company presents Honor Student by Michael Erickson, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m., May 19 - 28. "A student in a college creative writing class writes a story about a student, much like himself, who brings a gun to class and begins shooting his classmates and instructor, much like the actual people in the class. Fearful that the story is a blueprint for a real shooting, the instructor alerts university officials and tries to have the student removed from her class. But the student fights back. He argues she is trying to censor his freedom of speech, and that she is biased against his gender and race. The instructor is soon on the defensive. Her career and her reputation are on the line. Upstream Theater presents the St. Louis premiere of A Human Being Died That Night Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through May 28. "During the 1990s, psychologist Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela interviewed Eugene de Kock, commanding officer of the South African government's death squad stationed at Vlakplaas--a man who had ordered and carried out the torture and murder of dozens of anti-apartheid activists, earning the nickname 'Prime Evil.' De Kock was serving a 212-year prison sentence for crimes against humanity. Nicholas Wright takes us inside the prison where these interviews were conducted for a moving study of remorse, a timely call for truth and accountability, and a remarkable exploration of the power of forgiveness. Never the Sinner

New Jewish Theater presents Never the Sinner through April 2. "Chicago, 1924. Clarence Darrow is defending Nathan Leopold Jr., age 18, and Robert Loeb, age 19, in the 'Crime of the Century.' The two had decided to commit the 'perfect murder,' just for the thrill of it. Considering themselves Nietzsche's übermensch (supermen), they concluded they were removed from the moral and social imperatives of the world. They brutally murdered 14-year-old Bobby Franks but were quickly apprehended. Darrow's defense of them was an eloquent plea against capital punishment. This exquisite play asks what demons lurked in the minds of these two young men and the complex relationship between them. This is a love story set to themes of crime and punishment, the press, the times, humanism, Nietzsche's philosophy and the end of the jazz age." She regards him with disdain and he is not impressed with her patronizing tone and latent prejudice. But despite their differences, they grow closer and more dependent on each other over time. The once contentious relationship blossoms into a profound, life-altering friendship that transcends all the societal boundaries placed between them. December 2-11. "A Good Woman explores what it takes to be good in a world that is not so good. Says Chuck Harper, the Director, 'It is a play that I have always wanted to work on, more because I wanted to figure it out than because I had an idea of what I wanted to do with it. In our adaptation we've rewritten the play based on several translations. It is simple in its presentation, but the situations and questions are quite complex. This is a fascinating play.'
